Understand Your Bill

Your monthly statement is more than just a bill. It provides helpful information about your natural gas usage, the charges included in your total, and your account activity. Below, we'll explain how your bill is calculated and walk you through each section so you can better understand your statement.

Monthly Messages

At the top of every bill, you'll find a message from YCNGA. This space may include important account updates, safety reminders, seasonal energy-saving tips, appliance promotions, or information about customer programs and community events.

If you're enrolled in Paperless Billing, you'll see the same message on your PDF e-bill. Many bill toppers also include a QR code you can scan with your smartphone for additional information.

Because these messages often highlight timely information, be sure to check this section each month.

Your Account Information

The upper-right corner of your bill contains your account details, including:

• Account number
• Account holder name
• Service address
• Billing period
• Bill date
• Auto Pay draft date (if enrolled)

You'll also see the programs you're currently enrolled in, including Auto Pay, Levelized Billing, and Paperless Billing. An "X" next to a program indicates that it's active on your account.

Account Summary

The Account Summary provides a quick snapshot of your account.

Here you'll find:

• Your previous bill amount
• Whether your last payment has been received
• Any adjustments or late fees
• Any balance carried forward from a previous billing period

This section helps explain how your previous balance contributes to your current amount due.

Current Charges

This section breaks down the charges for your current billing period.

Your bill includes:

• Base Charge – A fixed monthly charge that helps cover the cost of providing natural gas service, determined by your current rate.
• Gas Related Charges – Charges based on your current rate and the amount of natural gas you used during the billing period.
• Other Charges – Any additional services or voluntary programs on your account, such as an Appliance Service Contract or a Feel the Heat donation.

These charges are added together to calculate your Total Current Charges. If you have a balance from a previous bill, it is then added to determine your Total Amount Due.

Consumption Information

This section shows how much natural gas was used during the current billing period.

You'll see:

• Your meter number
• Your current meter reading
• Your previous meter reading

Your natural gas usage is calculated by subtracting the previous meter reading from the current meter reading.

That usage is then converted into therms, the standard unit used to bill natural gas consumption.

The calculation looks like this:

Usage CCF	x	BTU factor	=	Consumption therms
Volume used for this billing period (current read minus the previous read)		Converts CCF into measurable heat energy units (therms)		Total amount of actual heat energy consumed during this billing period

You'll also find a chart showing your monthly natural gas usage over the past 12 months, along with a comparison of your current usage to the same billing period last year.

Understanding Common Terms

CCF

CCF stands for Centum Cubic Feet, or 100 cubic feet of natural gas.
This measures the volume of natural gas that passed through your meter.

BTU

BTU stands for British Thermal Unit.
A BTU measures heat energy. Because the heat content of natural gas can vary slightly, a BTU Factor is used to convert the volume of gas you used (CCF) into the amount of energy it produced.

🔥 One BTU is approximately the amount of heat produced by burning a single wooden match!

Therm

A therm equals 100,000 BTUs.
Because individual BTUs are very small, therms provide a practical way to measure the amount of energy used in your home or business.

Levelized Account Summary

If you're enrolled in Levelized Billing, you'll see an additional summary near the bottom of your bill.

Levelized Billing spreads your estimated annual natural gas costs into equal monthly payments based on your previous 12 months of usage. While your monthly payment stays consistent, your actual usage continues to be tracked throughout the year.

Each year after the May billing cycle, your account is reconciled:

• If you used less natural gas than you paid for, you'll receive a credit on your June bill.
• If you used more natural gas than your levelized payments covered, the remaining balance will appear on your June bill.

Whenever possible, our Customer Service team contacts customers with an expected balance before June so there are no surprises.

After reconciliation, your monthly Levelized Billing amount is recalculated using your most recent 12 months of usage.

Payment Coupon

If you pay by mail or at our Drive-Thru, use the payment coupon attached to the bottom of your bill.

• Paying in person: Bring your entire bill with you.
• Paying by mail: Write the amount enclosed in the space provided and return the payment coupon with your payment in the enclosed envelope.
